Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. Summary: Love that Lonesome Dove!

First we saw a collection of photographs of the principal actors and scenes from the miniseries at a museum in Fort Worth, than the long article in Texas Monthly. A wave of nostalgia prompted us to order the 2-disc set. What pure enjoyment to see Larry McMurtry's novel portrayed in such epic proportions. Robert Duval's Augustus McCrae and Tommy Lee Jones' Captain Woodrow McCall are true tour de force performances. The supporting cast were amazing as well. The young Diane Lane is a case in point. Now a mature woman some 25 years later, one could see her potential in her appealing portrayal of the young prostitute who ignited such passions. The tender affection and immense respect between Gus and Woodrow were subtly revealed as the series unfolded. We're looking forward to viewing it a again year after year.

Summary: Still Fabulous 20 years later

I watched this when it came out 20 years ago, and it was good then. But a 2nd viewing brought out more nuances and humor. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are spectacular as the former Texas Rangers on their last cattle drive. It's a classic!

Summary: We Don't Rent Pigs..

I don't know why this collectors edition was released so quietly -- it's a monumental achievement For most of us LD fans who managed through repeated viewings of - first, the multiple VHS collection, then the DVD set, all in TV quality stereo and 4:3 aspect, so my head was spinning watching it in widescreen with remastered clarity and 5.1 sound! I saw things and heard things I never before noticed, and the richness of the presentation brought out nuances in Duvall, Jones, and others that made me feel like I was seeing the movie for the first time. Considering the majority of the actors in the movie underplay their parts (for a more powerful effect), this print captures those silent expressions and subtle emotions -- while those are masterfully done by Duvall, who could have gone over the top with Gus, yet he gives us just enough, and Tommy Lee Jones, who brilliantly and subtly reveals Woodrow Call with facial expressions and body language, with minimal dialogue, I found the biggest difference in watching the late Robert Urich. His role as the narcissistic Jake Spoon could be dismissed as such and even overlooked as he's so unlikeable at times, but it's a deceptively powerful role, and there's a whole conflicted side Urich plays I never appreciated before. Clearly, as a Ranger, he was in his element, a hero (the picture in the bar was of the three of them), but he's struggled in peacetime: he's become a user, but with a good heart, a loyal friend, lost in bad circumstance, a man who uses his reputation while running from it... and he deftly weaves and maneuvers through this tapestry of character flaws and virtues-- something I never fully appreciated. All of which is summed up In his obvious feelings of respect and love for his friends In his final scene, but also in his final line, "...Who?" -- which is followed by the action that culminates in what Robert Duvall states is the best acting moment of his career (in the extras documentary). I doubt Duvall would have been inspired to mobilize his considerable talent for such a perfect moment without Urich's layered portrayal leading up to it. Well, I swear...

But the moments in the classic are many and no doubt every viewing will reveal more. Bottom Line: This is an excellent edition, well worth buying even if you have very other. I can't wait to get to the Blue-Ray version when I can!

Summary: Great To Watch

I didn't ever have the time to watch this when it first came out, I was working over 100 hours a week. When I saw this on DVD a few years ago I had bought it and I wish I had watched it years ago when it was on. When it was done I wished there was more, I did get the other movies that would like this. It is great to just get lost into it.
